Bluff Successfully in Poker

In poker games, the bluff is a critical tool for wining pots. Bluffing simply means that you are giving out signals of having a strong hand when you in fact have a weak one, with the intent of making opponents fold. The key to bluffing successfully has to do with timing, and more importantly with your ability to read opponents and analyze the situation as a whole.

Mathematically speaking, you can’t win every single pot in poker. The same goes for bluffing. You can’t bluff all the time and expect to get away with it. That is why it is important to prep your bluff to give it some credibility. So how exactly do you prepare a solid bluff? There are multiple elements that come in play. Let’s look at them. You can use these in tactics in your favorite online poker room.

Table Image
Your table image affects your credibility. If you are viewed as a “wild gun”, someone who tends to be super aggressive all the time, then you will be given little or no credibility when you try to bluff. People will think twice about folding their hands in response to your raise because they will question the strength of your hand. Ultimately, with the aggressive player images, you’ll get a lot of callers. Does this mean you can’t bluff if you have a loose table image? Of course not, but it makes it more difficult.

Choosing Who You’ll Bluff
To continue with the previous example where you have a loose player image, bluffing then becomes targeted. You need to pick who at the table will most likely fold to your big fat lie. Some players don’t know when to quit, and others give up too quickly. The later is the perfect opponent for you to bluff against. Over time, you’ll figure out who’s the calling station and who’s the pushover at the table. Bullying is encouraged in poker. Pick your fights against the weak players! If you spot someone who tends to fold under pressure, then keep them under pressure by raising them. When they don’t fold, they probably have a solid hand so know when to back off.

Reading the Board
There are situations when bluffing can actually be based on what community cards are out there. This is a risky situation, but one that can payoff. A good example is when there is a flush potential, especially when there are 4 cards of the same suit out of the 5 community cards. When the flush potential occurs, figure out if players are slowing down in their betting. It shows weakness on their part, and it’s an opportunity to pretend that you have a flush. The danger of course is that someone else has a flush too. Still, some people will fold their flushes before a large raise simply because their flush card is low and they figure you have a higher card then they do. You can also bluff in other situations like when there are straight potentials or trip potentials for instance. There is always the risk that someone else has made the hand you pretend to have made yourself. So ideally, you only want to attempt this when there’s few players involved in the hand because then statistically, odds that they made the hand are lower which means your bluff has a higher chance to succeed.

Bluffing With the Minimum Raise
Not many people write about this, but sometimes bluffing involves setting up a “call me” bet, and continuing to do so on subsequent betting rounds. This only works against opponents who understand the fundamentals of poker and are very analytical in their reactions to bets. Sometimes, making the minimum raise is enough to make others fold, especially when the blinds start to go up. Because you raise by the minimum, analytical players figure you want to get called and you’re actually trying to build a bigger pot, so they’ll refuse to give you the satisfaction by folding. On the other hand, someone who bases decisions on poker pot odds will not fold. If someone doesn’t fold by the time you get to the last betting round, you must decide how strong they really are. Have they been chasing cards? Do they have a hand? At this point, a substantial raise will be required to chase them away.

A lot more could be said about bluffing. I’ve only shown you a couple of situations when bluffing can be effective. There are many other elements to consider such as chip counts, pot size, bet size in relation to the pot, string betting, and so on. The most important aspect of being able to bluff opponent really has to do with your ability to read them. So if you want to learn how to bluff, you must first learn how to read your opponents.
